How I Imagine That Conversation Went Between Susan Collins and Brett Kavanaugh

“During a two-hour meeting in her Senate office with the Supreme Court nominee Brett M. Kavanaugh on Aug. 21, 2018, Senator Susan Collins of Maine pressed him hard on why she should trust him not to overturn Roe v. Wade if she backed his confirmation.”—NYT

This is how I imagine that conversation went:

Brett Kavanaugh opens the door to the office of Senator Susan Collins.

KAVANAUGH
Hi, Senator Collins. You asked to meet with me?

COLLINS
Yes, hi Brett. Please come in and shut the door.

KAVANAUGH
Sure thing.

Kavanaugh enters Collins’ office, but does not shut the door.

COLLINS
You said you were going to shut the door.

KAVANAUGH
Ah, well—guess I didn’t.
