I mean, you expect the peasant class to be able to hold a political coalition together? Of course, elites are needed. The elite of republicans is smaller, less committed and less numerous ( democrats are more educated, gave significantly more money to their party for the campaign and clearly have more power in the institutions and the bureaucracy).
